Abstract
The ability to sense low concentration of ethanol rise an urge, especially in food industry. This paper reported the sensing
performance of low concentration of ethanol solutions (0.5% to 3.5%) by varying the length (1, cm, 3 cm and 5 cm) and
waist diameter (0.5 mm and 0.8 mm) of etched plastic optical fiber. Plastic Optical fiber with waist diameter of 0.5 mm with
unclad length of 3 cm give an optimum performance in ethanol detection. Smaller waist diameter will increase the
absorption coefficient value and affecting the sensor’s sensitivity. The sensitivity obtained by this sensor is 0.0671 a.u/%
with linearity of 98% and limit of detection of 1.29%.
