Abstract
Fluoroquinolone carboxylic acids are antibacterial agents that attack DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV on chromosomal
DNA. In this work, the absorption spectra of ofloxacin in the presence of different amounts of calf thymus DNA are
presented and discussed. The self-association of ofloxacin in aqueous solutions was considered in terms of the
dimerization equilibrium and the dimerization parameters were determined. The results of the interaction between ofloxacin
and DNA were rationalized in terms of the Benesi-Hildebrand, Scott, Scatchard, Wolfe and Watanabe-Schwarz models, in
order to obtain the binding parameters.
