Abstract

The most important drawback of optical fiber communication systems is chromatic dispersion, which leads to the broaden-ing of pulses and a degradation of the signal. This work considers the design and performance analysis of the Linearly Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating (LCFBG) as an efficient dispersion compensation approach. The length of a grating was mod-eled as 10 mm with a linear chirp rate of about 1 nm/mm and 10 nm bandwidth around the centered wavelength 1550 nm.The slope of the dispersion of the simulated data was pulled out to achieve a constant negative chromatic dispersion of ~ -9.7 ps/nm. Optigrating 4.2.2 and OptiSystem 15 are used to simulate the proposed model. In this paper, four different mechanical weights are applied to the grating to evaluate its optical response. Results of these simulations show that there is a quantifiable quasi-linear compression trend, as the reflection bandwidth consistently decreases with the increase in mechanical weights applied, where the bandwidth reflection was initially 11 nm without any applied mechanical weights. However, upon increasing the weights to 0.981N, the bandwidth gradually decreased to half approximately 5 nm, which leads to significant improvement of dispersion characteristics of system.
